Day 145 Santisparc Beach
It was only 2 hours or so down the pacific highway and eventually the sun made a reappearance, as made it to the Sea of Cortez. Hopefully the water was going to be warmer than the Pacific side and with high hopes we followed the coastal road down into Mulege.
We skipped through town which was small and charming and since it was still early in the day went off to find where we would be spending the night. Most of the beaches are about 20km south of the town and we drove past the 4 before returning to the first one, Santisparc, which was rumoured to have hot springs. At the south end of the beach it was pretty deserted and had a few open beach shelters available. Seemed perfect. No showers or running water but the beach was nice and clean. We were sharing the beach with only 1 RV, a small tent next door to us and a couple of Americans in 2 mini-vans, a couple of retired buddies down in Baja for the surfing and kayaking. Pat and Drake soon got chatting to Sheena, she is Ms. Social after all and then they were offering us beer and use of their Kayaks. We were thinking of renting some so this was perfect! Sheena and Drake went out that afternoon on the kayaks while I set up the tent. It would help to ensure no one else stole our spot when we were out exploring.
The hot spring nearby turned out to be a lukewarm muddy pool in the mangrove swamp, and not what we expected at all.
The guys had bought some Shrimp and invited us over for dinner, I made up some pasta and beans to pad it out and despite their misgivings everyone finally conceded it was a pretty nice addition to the meal. The guy in the one man tent, John, turned up and had some food too. We sat around a bonfire of toxic fire logs drinking beer and wondering if we should risk my marshmallows on such a carcinogenic fire….
